Much is said and written about the VIP culture that’s plaguing the country, but there are some aspects of the issue that are not just related to the VIPs and require some introspection.

Mostly, it is the commoners who have to face this culture and it is evident, but not limited to, the streets. Excessive and sometimes ruthless security protocols, illegal fancy number plates coupled with a political party’s flag hoisted on the car’s front, are some of the evident social illnesses. Lately, I have noticed a lot of cars bearing a fancy number plate which, instead of a vehicular number, has certain initials inscribed on them; such as “Advocate”, “Press” and “MPA”.

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that these more-than-fancy number plates have less to do with establishing one’s identity and more to do with declaring, in literal terms, “don’t mess with me or I’ll teach you a lesson” or “stay away; I am an influential, I’m the one among the powerful and I’m not an ordinary person.” The disturbing fact is that many who take to the streets while bearing such plates are not just the ones holding an official portfolio, but the ones amongst us; lawyers, journalists, and others.

One can clearly see that such an unwanted display and show of power or influence does not bear resemblance with the titles relating to a cause; such as “doctor” or one that concerns information so as to observe care such as “baby on board”.

Displaying such fancy number plates may also have to do with an underlying fear that one may be subjected to mistreatment in some way. But if we dwell deeper, we would come to the conclusion that such people are possibly using their influence to declare that they are above the law and do not come under the same ambit of rules and regulations that average citizens do.

The fact of the matter is, that the real and actual strength that one can reflect their identity is to carry all relevant documents they are required to have while in possession of a vehicle; registration papers, a valid license and possibly an authority letter. Possessing these originals will provide you with the much required personal and legal strength and save you from the unnecessary attention-seeking. So let’s hurry up and get those documents validated!
